help cot or bassinet ???

So confused... we have got in our nursery package a cot and bassinet ... we live in a 2 storey so I can't wheel the bassinet room to room all day. Can you put a new born in a cot and then have the bassinet downstairs or can a  a new born sleep regular in a porta cot downstairs and then can have the bassinet upstairs and in our room if need be...so many options what do other people plan ?? Also have a co sleeper when do I use that ...confused !!!
