Late with a BFN?

I'm a day or two late, and tested yesterday morning with a Dollar Store test and got a BFN.  I usually spot for a day or two before my period starts and I don't have any spotting or anything.  Could it possibly be a false negative?  I don't want to get my hopes up, but could it have just been too early if I tested on the day that AF was supposed to come?
