How do you deal with beggars?

A poor gipsy lady begged me for money, after I refused she asked me to buy her some food for the baby. There was no baby with her but I felt so sad for that child so I said I will buy her some. When we got to the store she put everything she could in the basket but nothing for the baby. I told her Im not buying her anything because she clearly doesnt have a child. She then asked for money again and after I refused she hit me with the basket. I didnt say a word, I just left. I have no idea how to deal with that kind of situation? Do I hit her back and make a scene? What would you do and how do you deal with them in general?

This is why I do the shopping and carry a sharpie with me. If I get asked to buy food and I have the money, I will. My shopping list for them will be: a 6 pack of water, some snack foods, some PB&J ingredients and plastic silverware, and formula and/or baby food (whatever is age appropriate). If I feel the situation calls for it, I will also take them by the deli and buy them a warm dinner. Once I check out, I will be marking each Barcode with the sharpie both horizontally and vertically so that it can't be returned. If they truly need it, they'll be grateful and cooperative. If they don't, and they turn rude or demanding, I walk away.

I would have just bought the food. But if I did decide to refuse and she hit me, I would have just left like you did. Not much else you could have done.

tbh I always give if I have something, even if it's not much. I'll give em like five bucks or something-- I gave one last night a Starbucks gift card ($10) so he could get a hot drink or some food. I don't care if they spend the money on drugs alcohol etc. it's theirs to spend how they see fit at that point, and I'd much rather assume they genuinely need it than assume they dont. I generally don't have much to give anyways, so it's a once every few months thing-- and besides, karma will straighten it all out in the end.

if you're buying food, the best route is to not engage or take them in with you. they don't need to see what you can or can't afford or try to buy a bunch of crap. just go in, buy some nonperishables that travel well (granola bars, trail mix, dried fruit, some water bottles, etc.) and pass that entire bag off to them. honestly, depending if they're sitting to the side/begging/panhandling, they might straight up refuse and that's most common from panhandlers. probably bc panhandlers are more likely to be straight up faking it for some pocket change. but genuine homeless people are usually (in my experience) very grateful, and are usually the ones just sitting there quietly being ignored.

I don't give anything to beggers . Because some aren't even telling the truth. for example , there was a guy on the corner of a street asking for money holding up a sign , I forgot what it had said . Something really sad tho , I felt bad that I couldn't give him money because I was literally at my last dime and I needed it for something important . But fast forward im walking out of food lion and I see him get in his Mercedes Benz , a nice one at that , he takes his bummy clothes off puts on a nice white t and sunglasses and heads off. I'm  like wow , some people are just not trust worthy . And I'm not saying all of them are . It's just hard to try the pick the genuine ones . Because you never know anymore.

Call the cops that's assault.. she wants 3 square meals a day. There's her ticket.. there's ppl who are really hurting and people who scam. That was a scam artist

I just tell them I don't have any and they usually say thanks and walk away. I stopped giving money to beggars long ago.
