So my sons pediatrician called the other night to let us know that something came back on his newborn screen.  He is a carrier for the sickle cell trait.  This came as a shock to us because no one in my family has ever tested positive for this trait or the disease and we are both Caucasian (it's more common in African Americans and people from Mediterranean decent).  My husband was adopted and doesn't know his family history so more than likely it came from his side.  Now they recommend that we have genetic testing if we plan on having any more children.  Has anyonr else's childs newborn screen come back as having the sickle cell trait?
