Big Baby- feeling forced into a C-section

I'm 37 weeks today. They did an ultrasound and estimate that baby is 8.5 pounds. They said my cervix is very soft and almost open. They want him engaged in my pelvis sooner rather than later. They said if he doesn't engage on his own they would like me to do a c-section. They said my pelvis has no indications of not being able to accommodate a baby but that this baby "might be too big". I'm pretty annoyed and don't want a c-section unless it's absolutely necessary for safety of baby and me. Anyone have advice or similar experiences?
