can spermicide affect my vagina in a bad way

I've never used it, but I've been thinking about trying it. My boyfriend and I use condoms but I just want be more safer when having sex, especially if I'm ovulating at any time. I just want to know has anyone else used it and had a bad experience? I've heard that it could possible irritate your vagina
