cold sores

I get cold sores quite often because I have very bad skin and food allergies. I've had them all my life but they seem to be getting more frequent. I take medication when I start to get one and also put Abreva on it. Is there anything I can take to help with them not forming? Someone told me to take lysine pills... but it didn't seem to make a difference. They are on my face.
