If your partner and their family speaks another language (but also knows English fluently), should you make an effort to learn that language as well?

If you wanna know what Great Aunt Whoever is saying about you in the kitchen on Christmas Eve then yes. But yeah I do think you should. Who doesn't want to learn another language anyway?

I'm born and raised in Europe, Romania. My fiance is born here in the US.  
We live in Florida.
Our daughter will learn all three English,  Romanian and Spanish, just like I did.

My sister has been with the same guy for 3 years and recently married him. He is Hispanic and the majority of his family doesn't speak English well. She refuses to learn Spanish which I think is just kind of silly. Her kids will one day know Spanish so I figure why not learn.

I personally would because I love languages. I speak Spanish and my boyfriends family speaks Bangla, so I picked up very few words, but I wish I knew more 😊

Definitely! My husband is a full blown US American & only knew English, yet he knew how important it was to me for him to learn Spanish. Also, when he moved to R.D. he wanted to seem more native. Lol.

I think it's extremely odd that the American school system doesn't have a mandatory class to teach you another language.

If the other language is spoken more than English in the home and you want to be included in conversations, it'd probably be best to learn. I would imagine it would be exhausting on a partner to try to keep up with conversation and be a translator. Especially at family gatherings. If you have children with your partner, your kids are probably going to be speaking that language as well so you're gonna be the odd man out so to speak.

I think even if u didn't actually put in effort u would end up picking it up. Using context clues and body language ud probably start noticing certain phrases or words used a lot and their meaning. But if u plan to be with ur SO long term then u should probably start learning his family's language

I've been with my boyfriend for 2+ years and he speaks English and Creole. Some of his family only speaks Creole so we don't communicate much. It's nearly impossible for me to learn a new language completely at this point, but I have picked up on some of it.
