marriage is "just a piece of paper" ?!

This was up for debate between me and someone else. Ladies what is your thoughts on this? Also why is it more than just a piece of paper in every aspect? I need a list! Lol and go! ☺

Marriage is just a piece of paper for someone who doesn't love/respect/value their partner. Someone without integrity. Once you commit on that level with someone, you're vowing to make it work and to make it healthy and happy. I don't think marriages shouldn't be broken no matter what, because of said vows. An abusive relationship should be ended. But once you get married, you're more likely to put forth the effort and work to make the relationship last (and be good, not just miserably last). I once thought that marriage was just a piece of paper, until I met someone who made me change my mind without ever saying a word about it. And we're now having a child together. Marriage is a lot more than a piece of paper. It should be (because we know some people just treat it as this, a "piece of paper") a statement of your love and that your will do and be your best no matter what, in pro of a happy relationship.

I see it as the ultimate commitment. Yes, the legal document is a piece of paper, but it is my husband and I making the (legal) promise that we will always be there for one another.

It gives me his last name, it automatically gives me or him the security in the event of a tragedy.

Marriage comes with a piece of paper that signifies everything that comes with it. The piece of paper isn't a marriage.

It's an acknowledgment to the entire world, friends and family or your commitment to each other. My husband was my "boyfriend" within 2 weeks of meeting him. Being someone bf/gf in my opinion does not indicate the same level of commitment. I know other people see this differently. That's just my opinion.

Inheritance benefits: a spouse can inherit an entire estate without tax consequence. If there's no will a spouse still has inheritance rights.

Health insurance benefits: you may be able to be added to your spouse's employer sponsored plan at a family rate. (Less common since ACA)

Leave benefits: FMLA to care for your spouse if they have a serious illness. Bereavement leave if your spouse or their immediate family members pass away.

For me, marriage is a commitment to each other in front of our loved ones, and God. There is so much more to it than just paper. It literally joins two as one flesh, and starts a whole new life together.
Life can be great while just bf/gf or engaged, but there is a whole new level opened up after marriage. 💛

We share insurance, financial, cars, and a last name. That is what changed when we signed that paper, we aren't somehow going to now magically stay together forever, our kids are not now guaranteed a peaceful upbringing, neither of us is even guaranteed any stability from our current legal status, but we wanted to try for the long haul and there were grandparents that really wanted to see the legal aspect so we did it. I don't regret being married, but I feel just the same now as I did 14 years ago when I moved in, we will have been married 13 years in June.

I've felt closer to my husband since our marriage. It wasn't until we wrote our vows a few days before our wedding that we realised just how much it meant to get married. I didn't really feel like a member of his family until we got married - only then did his family start referring to me as sister/Aunty. I'll never understand how some people can say it's just a piece of paper.

For my situation it gives me more rights to my step daughter. Just being the gf her mother makes it so i cannot do much and only family is allowed to do those things. As a wife i then am considered family so my SO can make it so i am allowed to do the things she keeps me from doing now.
