Going on my 1st cruise, any tips or advice?

Recently decided to take a cruise with my SO for our 5 yr anni. He has been on a cruise before but I have not. When he went last time he was like 20 and essentially still with his parents in which they planned everything. I'm just trying to figure some stuff out. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated 😊😊

Don't book excursions through the cruise. It is uaually double the price of what it is through a website or etc. Google what there is to do at your ports and book it yourself. 
Take the pictures! They will offer tons of pictures. Take them. You don't have to pay for them up front. They usually print them off later and you go look at them and decide if you want them. They can get expensive if you choose to purchase them but Ya never know if you'll get a good one. So take the picture it's free! :)
Always play the slots at least once ;)

If you go on carnival: the nightly shows are awesome, definitely go to the marriage show (it's a hoot; they've changed it over the years but it's still a good time), hairy mans chest competition is always funny, on days at sea hanging out on the lido deck is fun but the ship has other things to do too (Trivia is awesome!) MUST have warm chocolate melting cake at least once.... It's a MUST. The formal dining isn't always "formal" you can get away with a cocktail dress and the food is delish.

Make sure to pack 1 dressy outfit, I wouldn't buy excursions ahead of time, the locals have the same ones at a much cheaper price, unless you pick one that starts really early in the morning. Eat lots of fiber because the food is endless lol. It's so much fun!

Start taking motion sickness medication several days in advance to get it in your system, it will help you not get seasick! I agree with what a previous poster said about carnival. If it's carnival you HAVE to do the night shows, they are so fun! My husband and I won free champagne on our cruise at one of the shows.

First thing-relax relax relax, books magazines music whatever your poison. My last cruise was a nightmare but I enjoyed the others. If it seems like the cruise is pushing something-whether a service or a product or a place to shop, don't buy into it. It's a ripoff even if they're promising coupons. You might want to get pampered, maybe a massage or something. Wait till you get to port and pay the locals instead. I got a 45 minute beach massage for $40 and it was good. The ship was charging $120 for the same thing. Last cruise, we went to Cozumel and only Cozumel for 2 half days & no fucking pyramids LIKE WE PLANNED....we took carnival bc my brother wanted the cheapest cruise line(funny he makes more than my entire family and spouses combined). Well you get what you pay for and they ripped us off big time, I could write a novel on that last minute robbery. Anywho, in Cozumel they kept pushing "diamond district prices"(even carnival pushed it) and most of the jewelry salesmen were almost heckling. The prices weren't good at all and half the "real" stones were fake. You couldn't go into most shops and just browse bc they'd be up your ass "buy this buy that buy buy buy" and once they realized you wanted to look first they'd give devil stares. The artistic jewelry shops were very friendly though. I had so much fun on the cruise I took 10 years before this, it was amazing. I really hope you're not taking carnival........
