What are your thoughts on Amber teething necklaces?

I know there is the safety concern, I am more interested in the legitimacy of it and whether any of you moms have noted a difference. Any one know how they work?

Wrap the necklace around the ankle and secure with a sock if u have to. That's what we do. Never around the neck

I've heard they work but I've also heard that they can break the cord and choke on the beads, also never let them sleep with it.
