Gestational diabetes??

Which one plays a role more? I know both must be important.

Genetics, age and BMI play a role in it, but there are young/fit mothers who get it too.
  
The way my OB explained it: It's not because you're fat or eat too much sugar. It depends on the way your body processes your hormones and whether or not those hormones affect the way your body processes glucose. If your body has a hard time processing the glucose because of the hormones, you will likely develop gestational diabetes- healthy or not, thin or fat, young or old.
  
I have all three of those strikes against me (over 25, close relative with diabetes and considered overweight) and I passed my test with flying colors.

You are at higher risk if family members have it but diet plays a big role. The majority of women with GD are overweight to begin with and have an unhealthy diet. That doesn't mean that healthy and fit women don't get it It's just very rare.

I'd say neither... It depends on how your body interacts with the hormones in the placenta.  Of course, if you were obese and have a family history of diabetes, your risk would be higher.  I am neither of that... In fact, I'm very slim and healthy and still got GD for some reason... It is what it is, but it's not the end of the world... Totally manageable and it's only during the pregnancy and it made me a lot more health conscious with what I eat and how I exercise, so that's good for the baby!

For me, definitely genetics. I exercise, though not as much as I'd like since midway through the second trimester. I've also gained 20 pounds in my pregnancy (I'm 27 weeks now), which is more than I'd like, but I was on the very low end of normal pre-pregnancy and so am still in the normal range. I am 32, so I guess considered slightly older, but usually for age I see 34+ show up as a risk. My Mom is diabetic and always had GD in her pregnancies and my sister had it as well. It's frustrating because I take much better care of myself than either of them did.

Affect by genetics. My cousin is healthy and fit (cycling and triathlons) and has had gestational diabetes and large babies with both of her pregnancies. Her father is a diabetic along with other extended family members.

I agree miss@usa....it's certainly not the only risk factor and science has proven that high bmi associated with excess weight is one risk factor. I think perhaps a nerve has been struck with Amy though i can't be certain or perhaps she just likes to argue actual scientific data.

You are stating inaccurately that I said thin women are less likely to get GD. I never said that....you are assuming what i meant.that i meant thin. Plenty of people are healthy and fit and have higher bmi's

Amy I made no assumptions. It is not common for healthy fit women to develop GD. you are very fixated on thin women. Healthy and fit women are not necessarily thin. Women that eat atrocious diets are within the group i mentioned at being a high risk.
You are simply arguing that thin women can get it too. I never stated that they couldn't. I stated healthy and fit women rarely get GD which is an accurate statement. It is far more common for overweight and obsese women to get GD as well as those who eat shitty processed foods and appear healthy. They are not healthy though which means their diet plays a large role.
