Smelly cord????

Help??? My baby is 9 days old and his cord hasn't fallen off yet. It smells really bad and has some slimy stuff and a little bit of blood.  Not painful or red. Been gently cleaning with alcohol twice a day .

The cord stumo is not supposed to smell. I would give your pediatrician a call just incase of infection. :(

My midwife advised the cord will probably begin to smell before it falls off. Also a bit of blood is normal. Give your dr a call if you're worried, but I wouldn't stress to much if it's not looking red or infected

Keep using the alcohol my sons was terrible it smelt like just awful I can't even describe it I mean...it is rotting flesh. Just keep it clean and I think the more it smells the quicker it will fall off his fell off in 6 day

Make sure you use a q-tip and clean between the skin and the umbilical cord. You basically need to lift the cord. Don't pull hard on it just gently enough to clean it thoroughly.

I was told not to use alcohol this time around. My daughter had some blood oozing but doctor said it's fine. They did say we should inform them of any smell though.

I didn't do anything to my daughter's except keep it dry. It never once smelled.

Go ahead and give your pediatrician a call. None of my kids were smelly. Sometimes they seemed gooey but not smelly. Also unless you were told to use the alcohol I'd go ahead and stop. The "old way of thinking" was that it helped dry it out faster but I think studies proved that wrong. With my older 2, now 14 and 16, we were told to use alcohol and when I had my 3 yr old I was told it's no longer the way of doing things. It changes so quickly lol. I don't think it would've caused any harm, it never did with mine, unless you are putting to much on there that it's constantly wet causing the smelly. When you give baby a bath if you accidentally get it wet you can use a dry q-tip to help absorb any moisture.

We were told to keep the cord totally dry (no cleaning at al) unless it bled or got peed on or something, in which case we should give it a one-time swab with alcohol. So you should not be cleaning it like that-- you may want to touch base with the dr at this point to check on the smell issue.

I was taught not to use alcohol because it kills the bacteria that is needed for it to rot and fall off. I think the alcohol keeps it too clean so it won't fall off as quickly.
