We both attended a wedding last evening. Matron of honor noted in her speech that marriage is difficult, hard work, etc etc. We looked at each other and laughed! The hardest thing about our marriage is not 'marriage' at all, it's PARENTHOOD. Our 5.5 month old really tests 'us' at times.

Honestly what surprised me was how excited my husband was to be married. He is NOT a mushy, lovey guy. He's one of those you know I love you because I take care of you guys. And he takes any chance he can to say "my wife" or bring up our wedding day. It's like that legal piece of paper made him feel like I really won't go away and he loves that. We lived together for three years so I don't know why that made a difference. But I won't complain :)

Honestly, to tell you the truth, the thing that I thought wouldn't surprise me was the one thing that did!! We lived together for a year before tying the knot so I really thought nothing would change... Boy was I wrong! Being live-in girlfriend & boyfriend really was different than being husband and wife. The first year of marriage was definitely an adjustment, and I wasn't prepared for that. I really thought we'd get married and that would be that. When you get married, the dynamic does change, and that can be hard in the beginning. It was definitely a change for the better tho! We were together for a year before moving in together, then lived together for a year before getting married, and I can honestly say that the first year of marriage was the most difficult. I was totally NOT anticipating that, but it's an adjustment for sure! Idk what it is about marriage that changes the dynamics of a relationship, but it does, and if you're not prepared for that (like we were), it can make your head spin! I think a lot of it has to do with the commitment of marriage. As an unmarried couple, we knew we were in it for the long haul regardless, but when we got married that level of commitment changed to: You're in this! There's no turning back, and that "long haul" just became very real! We were serious about that prior to getting married of course, but with marriage came the full knowledge that we made vows to each other that no matter what, do or die, we were in this together all the way baby! It's a beautiful thing, but realizing the permanence of those vows we made to each other made us both realize that this was a commitment not to be taken lightly. There's no backing out, only moving forward together each and every single day... And it IS something you have to work on every single day because the second you start taking that for granted and stop appreciating the little things, the more & more you lose sight of the big picture that you're creating TOGETHER!

That my husband took a while to "find himself" again. We were together for 5 years when we got married, but we were only 24. We worked different schedules and he spent the first few months in party-mode (just alcohol) heavily interrupting my sleep by having friends over all hours of the day. It caused a lot of debates where he felt I was too controlling. Looking back now he's embarrassed. The "freedom" of living in his own house seemed to be different than he had experienced in college. I didn't think we would have such a tough time starting out.

How hard the first year is, especially when you are away from your spouse due to them being deployed so you have to work even harder to communicate and work together to make things work. It's hard but so worth it.. and we are only half way through our first year.
