Struggling to commit to a name...Opinions please!

So my husbands name is David and he already has a son (my stepson whom I adore) who's name is James David. David didn't get to pick his sons name at all. Well now we are having another precious little boy and I agreed that we would pick his name out together. He really wants to name him after himself (David Thomas). I would love to do that but I'm not sure if that would be too odd, giving our second son or first sons middle name as his first name. What do you guys think?
