It's a comfort for a newborn to be held. My sons pediatrtion told me its not possible to "spoil" a newborn by holding them. They don't yet understand "if I cry I get held" they just know what comforts them and that's being held. 
Until they're old enough to understand that crying = being held then it's not spoiling

I never thought so however my daughter goes to daycare with a 10
Monthnold who is totally incapable of doing anything by himself! He has never rolled over and he is starting to walk! If he falls he cries until someone sets him upright! It is because his mother admittedly does not ever put him down at home! He is honestly lazy because he has never had to do for himself! My husband always told me I would spoil my little one and I thought he was crazy until I saw this kid. It's awful! He literally cries all day unless he is being held or eating!

You can spoil a newborn people don't give babies enough credit. They are very smart and learn quickly but it doesn't hurt to hold them a lot the first few months they can be easily taught that momma isn't going to pick them up every time they cry once they are a little older
