Popularity of a name- does it discourage you??

If you chose a name and you loved it, but found out it's popular, would you change your baby name???

For me it would, yes! I usually check the top trending name lists and avoid names that are on it.

I had always wanted to name my future daughter Emma. I'm a teacher and in the grade level I teach there were 5 Emmas between the two classes. Now I've dropped Emma from my list.

A little!  When I was growing up my name was fairly popular.  There was always at least one other Lauren in my classes or at work, so I usually had to go by something else.

But...Super unique names or strange spellings don't appeal to me either.  That's just personal preference based off of my experiences.  My last name is can be hard for people (it's O'Malley, which usually gets spelled wrong, pronounced wrong, or causes problems with legal documents because some systems allow you to add the apostrophe and others don't), so I wouldn't want to give my baby another name that they would constantly have to clarify the pronounciation or spelling of.

So while I would hesitate to give my babies the names I'm hearing the most often, I probably won't be naming them anything that's all that original either.  Perhaps something just old fashioned enough that you don't hear it much anymore.

Yes. My husband and I have loved the name Aria for years.... but now with Game of Thrones everyone is naming their daughter Arya. So we have decided to flip flop the first and middle name.

We liked the name Liam for years, but apparently a crap ton or other parents do too, so we dropped it.

The trendy/popular names are def a turn off. On a middle name rant, it seems like EVERYONE is choosing Grace or Rose for middle names for girls. It gets a bit old.

Depends. If I REALLY loved a name and it had significance I'd use it regardless (provided I didn't know kids in my inner circle with that name already). Also you can take the name lists too seriously - sometimes something common nationally is not common where you happen to live. You'd be bummed if you avoided a name you love and then went on to find you never hear it in your area! Find a friend who works in childcare and ask what they think 😉

My husband and I loved the name Hunter (for a boy or a girl) for years. Now that we're actually expecting he refuses to name our child that because he's a teacher and has had way to many students with that name. We've picked another name that isn't as popular.
