I looked up the article. It's a single teacher of a single course who outlined the requirements before students wrote their paper.  Depending on the content of the course, I could imagine this would be completely appropriate and follows the norms of the discipline.

The article headline is clickbait and implies that this is a university wide trend even though there is no evidence that this is the case.

Articles like this make me think very little about the content, rather they make me concerned with the critical thinking and reading skills of people that follow these news sites.

In university you're graded on academic writing, and using "he" where he is not the correct term, is not writing academically.

But I know that in the exams I sat you could lose marks for certain pronoun usage. However that was more along the lines of 1st/2nd/3rd person talk, I think.

I know I could've lost marks on repeatedly using 3rd person pronouns in my Philosophy exam 🤷‍♀️

Depending on the assignment, if they're instructed not to use certain pronouns then that's the students fault for not following the rules.

There's easily accessible thesaurus' to assist him in phrasing something. If he doesn't know off the top of his head it's his own fault for not taking the time to further his own education on the subject.

People need to start taking their own personal beliefs out of education. (Including teachers) and start taking the time to learn.
