Sex after baby

So i went to a Dr appointment today (I'm 4 weeks postpartum) and I will be getting put on birth control at my 6 week appointment. But my doctor gave me a sample of birth control from now until then saying "in case I want to have sex from now until my 6 week appointment." So I'm really confused because she didn't check my stitches to see if I was healed or anything. So does this mean I'm free to have sex or?
