please someone explain racist to me

I live in Australia and everyone I know is Australian even if they were born overseas (but they can also chose to identify as where they were born) What the heck is race? I always believe that it was where you were born/chosen to belong to? I do understand there is culture you gain from your race but other then that what the hell is race?
