What is it with men wanting to name their sons after them?!

My husband wanted to do this and luckily he got over it. I would ask him why does he want that anyway and he'd just say "idk I always wanted a son named after me." I can't help but think it's something biological? An urge to claim their territory? Or maybe just a mans ego? Some would say I'm overthinking this but this happens way too often in society. A woman carries a baby for 9 months and the man expects her to give up the experience of naming him? Thoughts??

I'm naming my son after my husband. Michael Angelo III - but I like the name so it doesn't bother me at all. He gets to name his son because it's his son too. I just get to be the lucky one to carry it lol - But I only agreed if I got to name our first girl after my great aunt Lyla which he's fine with. I'm proud to have a son with his dad's name. And his grandfathers name. To each their own. Besides, I know some people who've picked names I absolutely hate for their children, but it's not my business because it's not my child. I don't think it's an ego thing in every situation.

I just realized I have my mother's first name because she didn't have a name for me when I was born and after two weeks she was running out of time to register me. 😆😆

I saw a girl on this app who genuinely wanted to name her daughter after herself and so many people poo-poo'd the idea and called her arrogant. I don't get why naming a son after his father is any different just because it's more common. I don't see it as arrogant or wrong, but I wonder about the double standard. I'm personally not into it because I see my son as him being his own individual and should have his own name,  he already gets his last name so the family connection is there regardless. I kinda see what you're saying here.

It's tradition and I think it's really sweet. I would be so happy to name my son after his father.

Ego has nothing to do with it. That's how people used to be sons would be named after their fathers. They where would be a jr, the 2nd, the 3rd. That was the way of carrying on the names and littlw girls were often named after grandmothers and great grandmothers. Now people are cycling through new names and making some up as they go so all of the old names will be non existent.

I hate it your giving somone else someones name, so whenever you hear that name memories of the first person who had it will be replaced by the new person named it.

If we have a son he will have my husbands middle name (hubby's father also has the same middle name). My husband has a son from a previous marriage that doesn't have his middle name and I think it's weird as usually the oldest child has a "carry on" name.  We are both on the same page. He asked if we had a girl if I wanted to carry on my middle name, which I don't... my brother has my grandpas first name and dads middle name and my sisters middle name is my grandmas name (they are here younger than me which is weird I don't have a "family" name). Maybe that's why I don't think it's weird to carry on family names... we have it on both sides. To each their own tho!
