stray dog: update

Not really a controversy I guess but I don't know where to put this??? I found this dog. I was bringing in groceries and I felt something lick my leg and i turned around, it was him. He then ran off into the street and almost got hit by a car. I opened the door to my house to bring in the bags and he ran in! He's really sweet, no collar, was really hungry, and smells bad. I don't wanna take him to the shelter but my little one doesn't like other dogs so he's in a crate right now. None of my neighbors know who he is. I don't even have a collar to put on him to take him to the shelter. So what would you do???
