Do you consider legality or morality more important?

Ive seen people say pretty often on here, that something is immoral, and their only reason is that it's illegal. Do you agree with this thought process? I would argue that there are plenty of laws that are extremely immoral. There are laws against things that aren't immoral. What do you think? Do you put more emphasis on legality or morality?

It depends on the law, the act, and situation. I myself look at both equally, but in certain situations one does become more important than the other.

Example: prostitution is it illegal yes. Do I find it immoral no. I understand the context of victimless crimes, but I also know that most sex workers are forced into this industry as a child against their will.

Example: death penalty is it legal yes. Do I find it immoral yes/no. I understand the legality of the law and I understand that taking a life of another human being is expensive on the tax payers. But, in certain situations their are exceptions to this law.

There is a lot of grey area in my opinion.

Morality. I don't think all laws are moral and I don't think everything that is illegal is immoral.

I think morality is the basis for most laws in society. Laws have to be broader to encompass different types of morality and levels of intent and circumstances.

This is a hard question. The problem with morality is that it's an individual's code of conduct, which can be tricky because we all have certain things we can agree are wrong, like murder. But there are others, like sex before marriage, that not everyone agrees on. And the problem with legality is that laws often don't reflect the morals of society, since sometimes they're slow to catch up to progress. For example, same sex marriage was illegal until recently, even though many people considered it to be morally fine for decades before the law changed.

I'm admittedly a rule follower so I like the legality but there are some I don't find moral. I don't believe in the death penalty, for example.
