Münchausen syndrome is a mental illness. People should not face life time consequences for something out of their control. That is like permanently punishing a person for having depression or anxiety, you wouldn't right?

Obviously it's awful what Münchausen syndrome can do, but they should be institutionalised and receive intensive mental health care.

No. They should recieve therapy and be put on a watchlist where them and their kids are heavily monitored at any doctors office and hospital they go to to make sure the kids aren't being mistreated.
