Should he be on the birth certificate?

My child's father has showed no interest in my pregnancy and I have no real desire for him to be around as he has shown himself to be of low character. Is it a must to put his name on the birth certificate once my baby is born?

Depending on where you live you may not be able to even if you want to. In my state the father has to sign the paperwork himself in order to be listed on there

I know in my state, Maine, I could not put his name on the birth certificate without him there to sign it. It all depends on the state that your little one is born in.

Why would you want to give your child the last name of a "man" who isn't there and who is not proud to be the baby's father. It's like you are lowering yourself and looking ridiculous in the process. Like you're desperate for him to come back or step up. It won't happen! You're the one who is going to solely take care of your child so your last name should be your baby's last name. We are better than this ladies come on!

Depending on what state you're in, putting him on the birth certificate could give him automatic joint legal custody, the same as you. Until/unless you file for sole custody, which in my area they hardly ever give. This can be a nightmare if he doesn't step up and parent or is absent and then pops up later on. However, if his name is not on the birth certificate, you will not be able to receive child support. If you leave his name off, and he later steps up and parents, or you later need to file for child support, he can be added with a DNA test at family court. If you don't add him, he can still petition the court for shared custody of your baby and they will order the test.

Depends if you want to collect child support the fast way. In my province you can only start the paper work after baby is born, so if you need that money then put his last ass on that birth certificate
