What all does the genetic testing consist of? I want to find out the gender sooner, and I'm wondering how to ask my midwife/doctor.

Mine included abnormalities with chromosomes 13, 18, 21, as well as sex, but I know you can do more if you wanted.

Genetic testing consists normally of cystic fibrosis, and all chromosome disorders (down syndrome, edwards syndrome etc) and gender is not always included in those tests, depends on the test.

Definitely check with your insurance first it can be very expensive. I just asked my Dr for it and they scheduled a blood draw and I had results in 5 business days

Most likely a test that also tells you gender will not be covered by your insurance. If that's the only reason you want a genetic test just wait until your ultrasound. I know it's hard to wait but it could potentially save you hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Your insurance likely won't cover it if you only want it to find out the gender. It can cost thousands. It's usually only covered for those 35+ or high risk, and they're cracking down on those guidelines because of people taking advantage of the test to find out the gender.
If you're concerned about abnormalities you can still have the quad screening done. If that test came back abnormal then you would be able to have the other test. 
I found out the gender at 14 weeks via ultrasound so, it isn't too bad to just wait~

You need to ask for the NIPT, non invasive prenatal testing. Not the quad screen which is known for false positives and doesn't check for sex

I had what was called the Clari Test. It's genetic testing and gender reveal. My doctor does the test anywhere between 10-15 weeks
