going back on birth control?

So for a little back story, when i first started having sex I went on the pill but always seemed to mess up the times and forget to take the pills. So I moved on and tried the patch, which I actually really enjoyed for a year or so before I started having an allergic reaction to the adhesive. Then, with much regret, I tried the shot that you get every three months. I got my first injection and my body and hormones freaked out! I had my period for 9 months and then didn't get it for another 9 months so i have steered clear of birth control all together since. I've considered maybe taking the pill or getting an iud. I wanted to ask for some advice and/or opinions? I'm now in a serious relationship and having sex regularly so I want more protection but my family doctor kind of sucks and just isn't helpful with my questions.
