What are your opinions on hormonal IUDs?

Hi!

So I currently have a non hormonal iud and have had it for a year. My periods are definitely heavier and a couple days longer and I do experience cramping a few days before my period.

I am wondering what everyone's opinion is on the hormonal iud as I'm considering on switching to that instead because with my current iud it is affecting my iron levels a lot.

Anybody's advice or their story on their experience would be great. Thank you! 🙂

I haven't been on birth control since I was 20, but I decided 2 weeks ago to try the IUD. I'm 27 and because I haven't had children my doctor recommended Kyleena. It's smaller, a lower dosage of hormones compared to Mirena and it still last 5 years. I'm so anti anything that isn't natural, but I thought the IUD would be a good move for me since I get bad periods.

The past two weeks have been filled with spotting and slight cramping, but it's tolerable. Just one of the side effects since my body is adjusting. Other than that, I don't regret getting it. I'm sure in the next 3-6 months, my periods will get lighter and I won't spot as much. I definitely think it's worth looking into.

I've been on Mirena for 5 months now. The insertion hurt like a bitch when they opened up my uterus with the speculum and I had cramps that made me want to die for about 4 days after. Since the , no pain, mild PMS-ing, very light periods, and supposedly there's a high chance of no period at all after 6-8 months.

I used Loloestrin before the Mirena and didn't have periods for months at a time, so I was pretty disappointed when they started back up with Mirena. But I was worried the new healthcare in the US would stop covering birth control, so I decided to get the IUD while it was still free.

I recently got my skyla (3yr) iud removed and a mirena (5yr) inserted. I loved my skyla and decided to get the mirena when it came time for a new one. I wanted something that would last longer and the kyleena isn't available where I get medical care yet. I tried almost everything except the patch and the nexplanon implant before getting my first iud. My periods are lighter (more like spotting 1-2 days) and I don't get the emotional rollercoaster like I did with other methods since it's localized. Only side effect I really had was excessive bloating every day. I'll take that over all of the other bad side effects any day!

I'm on Skyla and it's worked wonders for me. There are some obvious side effects of being on a hormonal IUD though . I have noticed that my periods are lighter and shorter and the cramps aren't as bad. Do a little bit of research on the different types of IUDs and keep in mind, if you haven't had children yet, Mirena may be ruled out (at least that's what my doctor told me).
