The Truth About Twins
So I've noticed alot of people have alot of misconceptions about twins, and truthfully, I used to be one of those people until I did my research. When I found out I was pregnant, I was curious as to what my odds of having twins were seeing as my Amma had Fraternal twins but it was with a different man (not my grandpa).
I did my research and this is what I found: Identical twins are not genetic. Anyone can have them. I can have them, you can have them, even the mail man can have then. There is no scientific proof of anything but luck in the case of identical twins.
Whereas, Fraternal twins can be genetic but they aren't always. In the case of genetics, fraternal twins can only be passed down from mother to daughter to daughter etc. Fraternal twins are caused by hyperovulation, so if your mom had fraternal twins or your grandma or her mom then you do have a chance of having them as well, but if twins ran in the man's side of the family, unfortunately that will not affect your odds seeing as his mom can't pass over ovulation down to a male.
But fraternal twins are not only caused by genetics, like in my case. I did not believe I have a higher chance because even though my Amma had fraternal twins, she also had 7 kids before hand and she was older when she had the twins. As women get older their chances of fraternal twins grows higher. There are other factors too like fertility drugs which makes sense because that would obviously increase your chances of dropping more than one egg per cycle (hyperovulation)
