Enlistment?

How long does it take for military enilistement? How long does it take between enlisting and getting financial assistance? My husband and I will probably be evicted in 2 weeks. We have our 11 mo and we have no friends or family to help us out. We live in LA and can't afford our rent $2000. We both applied for personal loans to pay for rent for May/June to buy us time. But we both got denied. We have been on the childcare assistance waitin list for 5 months and filled out the application for housing assistance and will be on the waiting list. We have $200 in our account and waiting for next weeks paycheck. Our only option now is for hubby to join the military or go to a homeless shelter.

You could tell him to ask his recruiter which job would allow for him to leave for boot camp earlier, that's what I did. I was an aviation electrician and while that wasn't exactly my favorite job, it was a job that was in demand at the time and therefore I was able to leave shortly after joining.

Depends on his testing and what jobs he qualifies for and the demand for the job he signs up for. He could leave for boot camp anywhere from a few weeks to a year or longer after enlisting; it just depends on his MOS. As for getting paid, he wouldn't get paid until he is physically in boot camp. If you two are married, he can claim you as a dependent and make more money than the average airman/seaman or whatever branch he chooses to go into. How much he makes will also depend on where he gets stationed, you make more money where it's more expensive to live. If he has college experience he could potentially graduate boot camp with a higher rank.

Yes; more often than not it takes a lot longer than two weeks. When I joined in 2009, the whole process from me walking into the recruiters office-leaving for boot camp took about 2 months. I got lucky though and it worked well. I scored well on my ASVAB and the better you do, the more jobs you qualify for. There are a lot of factors that go into it but it's a life changing decision. Best decision I ever made, but you really need to think about it I'd say before just jumping in. Good luck to you both. If he's open to taking any job then he has a better chance of the process being done quicker. However (and I'm not saying this is the case) he has to be able to pass a drug test.

It's really something he'd have to discuss with a recruiter; they should be able to give him an estimate on the soonest he can leave for basic depending on what MOS (the job) is available. Then he will have to qualify for it with his ASVAB scores, pass MEPS and swear in, all before he gets shipped off for basic

It does take a bit. An then our housing allowance didn't kick in for a month after he left. But it's a really great idea to joint the military it gave our family a great start.

Takes a lot longer than 2 weeks. Just the process to enlist sometimes takes longer than that if it hasn't been started because od having to take the ASVAB, and then getting a detailed physical, choosing a job etc.

It's a fairly long process. Several months at least. I wouldn't count on it being any earlier than august

My husband has been in bootcamp for a month and we haven't seen a check yet. He didn't join for the money, but I would advise against this as a short term option. He has signed 8 years of his life to the military, this isn't a quick solution.
