co sleeping?

I'm 26 weeks pregnant and FTM so I'm just trying to figure out what my life will be like when my baby gets here. I hear a lot of people cosleep with their babies and I'm just wondering what's the pros and cons of cosleeping vs crib/bassinet??

Nope. I am a pediatric ER nurse at the biggest children's hospital in the country. I have personally done CPR on too many babies found not breathing due to sleeping in their parents' beds. It is dangerous and not worth the risk. 20 women will tell you they did and their baby turned out fine, but the 1 where the baby died often won't speak up. It only takes a matter of seconds. If you want the baby in your room, near your bed, I agree it is the best sleeping situation. But in your bed is not worth the risk. Find a safe and sleep approved bassinet, Rock N' Play, cradle, etc. to keep baby within arms reach by your bed.

As an OB/peds nurse, I have to discourage cosleeping. Unfortunately, I've had quite a few OB pts whom have lost babies previously to SIDS or suffocation. One particular case involved the young infant getting stuck between the bed frame and bed and suffocating. Unfortunately it happens. No one ever thinks it'll happen to them.

I still wanted to maintain our master bedroom as mine and my husbands space. So as soon as we got home from the hospital our daughter slept in her crib in her room. She is now 2 and to this day she has never slept in our bed. It's all about personal choice and what YOU want it to look like. Straight to crib was easier for me because there is no transitions.

I've coslept with all six of my babies and going to with my son coming in August. Cosleeping actually saved my daughter's life. She had silent relfux and I woke up to her thrashing. I immediately picked her up so her air way could clear. If she had been in a crib rather in my room or a nursery she would have died because she wasn't making any noise. Once her air way cleared she started screaming and crying, but before that she was just silently thrashing like a fish out of water. She was one month old.

I've been co sleeping with my daughter for almost 4 years now (she's 3 1/2). Ever since she was a baby it's been so easy. It's a little hard now that I'm pregnant with her sister cause she is much more clingy. I'm struggling with how to transition her to her bed and make room for the new baby. Studies say that babies who co sleep are less likely to pee the bed (true for mine, not a drop, never used nighttime diapers when potty training), and have more confidence, higher self esteem, less anxiety, less psychiatric problems. They have a more stable body function, heart rate, breathing, comfort, as opposed to those who are not co-sleepers. Honestly for a while I wondered if it was a mistake not putting her in a crib but after reading more into it and just the experience of it with my daughter has really enlightened me, I mean who does love to wake up to their baby holding your face and telling you you're beautiful and how she loves you sooo much even with her stinky breath. Mine is so clingy right now we sleep holding each other hugging, and when I roll over she hugs on to my belly. We are very close, she tells me everything, sometimes too much detail lol but make the decision now cause getting them in a crib or bed after co sleeping is hard work... she refuses.

We'll be using a cosleeper next to my side of the bed. It'll make nighttime feedings easier and I know will put my mind at ease. We have a guest room, so if hubby has an important meeting or something early in the morning the next day or if baby just won't settle down, he said he'll go sleep in the other room for a night.

We are sharing a room, but not a bed. Co-sleeping is difficult to define as many people define it as sharing a bed, not a room, and vice versa. She will sleep next to the bed, but not in it. SIDS is a main risk factor that can be prevented by proper sleeping conditions.

I was totally against cosleeping as I am in emergency healthcare and it is very dangerous. However my youngest didn't sleep much at all for the first month. We tried putting her in the pack and play next to our bed at first and she cried every hour. My husband and I were exhausted, taking turns sleeping. We decided when my husband started a new job and had to get sleep we needed to try something. We tried this cosleeper in our king bed and our daughter started sleeping 6 hours at a time. I caution anyone to consider all the factors before deciding on co sleeping but sometimes it's more dangerous to have lack of sleep.

That can be controversial to a lot of people. My girlfriends gave me the death stare when I said I was using a bassinet and not cosleeping. I told them the risks and they said it was BS. Personally though, even though we have a king sized bed I'd like as much room as possible and also not to be worrying that I'm going to roll over or accident throw a sheet over the baby. A bassinet is just safer to me. But that's my opinion.

I do plan on cosleeping but also having a bassinet beside my bed. This way I can put baby wherever we are most comfortable at that time and it will be much easier to feed and change at night.
