Why are video games bad?

Just curious as to what you guys think, why is playing video games, being on your phone, watching TV for an extended period of time bad for you/your kids?

I really don't think these things are bad as long as they are used in moderation. As long as my kids socialize well in person and spend time doing other things, I really don't care how long they spend on a video game or watching tv. As long as my kids are happy and healthy, it doesn't bother me.

Too much screen time is a bad thing..
1. Blue light in screens causes eye strain,
2. Heavy use at a young age impairs mental development,
3. Sitting for long periods and not exercising often isn't healthy,
4. They're not building skills to socialize in person and when they do it when playing games it can promote aggressive behavior.
On the other hand, certain video games and programs, with moderation, can be beneficial..
1. Video games can improve hand-eye coordination,
2. Strategic games can improve cognitive abilities,
3. Educational games/shows can teach them skills and information about a variety of topics (environment, societies around the world, history, math skills, etc.) they wouldn't have learned otherwise,
4. Team games can build leadership skills and teach them how to work as part of a team.
Moderation is key, it's a cliche for a reason.

Newer research has shown that video games have the same kind of affect as most drugs and alcohol have on your brain, as well as porn. It can lead to addiction which includes all the major symptoms of addiction, such as irritation, detachment, loss of interest in normal daily activities, depression, anxiety and withdrawal, insomnia and anger and lack of appetite, just to name a few.

Staring at screens for long periods of time is bad for your eyes. The blue lights cause strain.

Generally I don't think it's bad for you in moderation, but in most cases if you watch tv or play video games all day you aren't moving and being constantly sedentary isn't good for you. We need to move and use our muscles.

But otherwise, video games have proven to be therapeutic for me, as someone with ADHD and multiple mental illnesses. I want to be a concept artist so actually playing a lot of games helps me understand the mechanics and design involved in them.

Hey, I have my bachelor's of science in game design and I completely agree, like with most things it's all about moderation. There are tons of cognitive benefits to playing video games, tv.... not so much but it does expose your kids to unique scenarios that they may n it be in otherwise.

But too much of anything is well... too much. For instance, MIT did a study about first person shooters. After 40 hours of gameplay within a month it was proven that the brain expands in a way that allows a person to keep up with more objects around them within and outside of view, causing them to be better drivers, amongst other things.

These affects lasted 3 months before starting to deteriorate without playing at all. Hence the benefit without the need of 8 hour benges on a regular basis. I could keep going but the point stands, moderation of everything is beneficial in some way.
