What's good for the individual is not good for society, and the opposite is also true, what is bad for the individual is good for society. Less freedom and stricter gender roles, social norms etc (conservatism basically), is better for society as a whole when it comes to running smoothly etc. However this is bad for the individual. More freedom to be whoever and do whatever regardless of gender, sex, race, etc is good for the individual but creates a more divided and not so smooth society. So which do you think is more important? (Stolen from my Sociology class.)
