Bumpers? Did I miss something?

What's the issue with bumpers in the crib? Are they not safe? I think I missed the memo.

They are associated with a higher risk of SIDS - baby can suffocate against them or get wedged between the bumper and mattress. There is a risk associated with them. I didn't use them at all until my daughter started rolling and kicking around in her crib. We got the mesh ones after she get her thigh stuck between the slats a couple times. They were a lifesaver for that! But at that point she was already rolling over and starting to pull up, so I was less concerned about her getting her face stuck in them and not being able to get out.

My mom had 5 kids and we all had fluffy bumpered up cribs and all were fine. I chose to not use until they were older like over a year and were fully mobile in the crib. As itty bitty babies my babies never rammed up to the sides until they were bigger and the bumpers were safe per my pediatrician after they are one.

It's supposedly a suffocation hazard but I choose to use a bumper to keep my baby from hurting himself. He never went face first into it. If he did I would have removed it. My husband and I've talked about it extensively and made our decision.
