Why does it always look like I sneezed in my underwear? 💦
Okay, here is the real deal: That stuff in your underwear is called "cervical mucus." Cervical mucus is vaginal discharge that part of a healthy, normal body. And no one should be shamed for having too little or too much of it. (We’re not saying we looooove having it there, we’re just saying pretty much every healthy woman deals with it.)
What is cervical mucus?
Cervical mucus is a substance produced by your cervix and is a great indicator of how fertile you are at any given time during your cycle.
Knowing how to identify your most fertile days can help you in family planning and before you get weird and itchy at the term “family planning,” remember that it means either planning to start a family or planning to specifically NOT start a family because you’ve never been to Spain (and your discount flights app keeps offering you pretty amazing deals on getting there).
What's NOT normal
Here are some warning signs that stuff down there is NOT normal: A green, yellow, or gray discharge can mean something is off. (If it looks like ectoplasm from the Ghostbusters movie the answer to “Who you gonna call?” should be “Your doctor.”) A fishy smell or a strange odor could also indicate a problem. And finally, any unusual symptoms like itching and burning are never normal. If these happen to you, reach out to a doctor.
Knowing your CM patterns
Unfortunately, most women in our community do not know their cervical mucus (CM) patterns. Nearly 33% of over 17,000 Glow users who answered a Glow poll said they don't track their CM at all and only 8.5% said that they were intimately aware of what their normal pattern of cervical mucus is.
Cervical mucus is a super easy way to observe patterns and learn about what’s going on with your cycle and your body. If Moana found her way through the Pacific Ocean by following the stars, you can figure out what’s going on with your body by studying your CM and if you’re creative and upbeat in your attempts, maybe we can get the folks at Disney to write a catchy song about it.
