I was originally looking into possibly adopting through foster care before I got pregnant, because I didn't think I was going to be able to get pregnant. I couldn't go through the private adoption route, it's so expensive, unfortunately.

I'm in Australia and there's virtually no local permanent adoption system - a 74% decline in adoptions in Australia in the last 25 years.
 
It's all fostering with a strong focus on trying to reunite kids with their biological parents, regular contact etc. Only 70 carers managed to adopt children last year.
 
Adopting from overseas is near impossible too. For those who do, it's a very long wait, and expensive. There were only 82 last year, total.

Pregnancy in my family is typically high risk and I have bad back problems so getting pregnant sounds as about as appealing as getting into a car accident.

On the other hand when I was young my parents hosted foster children and that experience has really changed my life. When I'm ready for a family we'll foster and adopt out of the system. I think it is ridiculous, even offense, to see family's having their fourth, fifth, even sixth kid when their are so many who will never grow up with a mothers love. Selfish is what that is. If I were a dictator the first thing I would do is mandate birth control.

Thanks for posting this. So many comments flood abortion topics demand they "just" adopt out or "so many people would wanna adopt it". Apparently not 🤷🏼‍♀️

I would probably adopt internationally if I did...but I'm feeling maxed out with how many kids I have now so I don't see it in my future!

Where I'm from adoption process is costly and the waiting period is too long (2 years). There are so many kids that need a home but too much red tape makes is so difficult.

In my state, the list is incredibly long, and it's almost impossible to get a child under 5. Also, these children often come from a lot of trauma (especially being that i live in chicago😳) AND Illinois is a state focus of reuniting parent with children. So we've talked about fostering, but i don't know if adoption through fostering is in our sights
