White People Can't Like Black People?

Question

I can only assume this person is angry and hurt from the decades of oppression but an African American woman said that I cannot be part of my school's BLM club because I'm white. I realize the systematic oppression and privilege I get from society unconsciously but I always have seen my black community and black people as my equals. I feel like police brutality to them is horrid that's why I jumped in a fight myself (my best friend Tee Tee was about to be slapped, long story).
Am I wrong or was this just an example of how the world has become so divided by things as superficial as race, religion, and political agendas? Things that should not matter, but sadly, because of society... do matter... It hurts that I cannot do more. What can I do even more to aid my community? Black or white, Hispanic or Japanese, everyone matters. It just so happens that society treats blacks horrible. It has to stop— through example. What can I do?

Part of being a strong ally is understanding when not to jump in.

If you really want to help, why don't you just start your own club? Maybe it's something you and your bff can do together.

Come up with a creative name, and list of goals. When you meet up you can discuss intercommunity issues. Give support to interracial couples, and friendships, share your cultures, and come up with a community project to address policing or whatever else needs attention.

I'm glad you are taking their pain into consideration. Being oppressed is another form of abuse and all victims react differently. I can only imagine what they have gone through to feel the need to say that to you. I would say the best thing to do is use your private to call out people who harass minorities.

The world has always been divided by race. That's how white people wanted it. I was raised by my white mom and my dad and mother were married at some point but eventually he divorced her and went on to marry a black woman and have fully black kids. He is still married to her. I don't blame that black woman for expressing her opinion to you and you shouldn't be offended. White people have oppressed black people for years and still do. Black people aren't treated nearly as good as whites. I've seen all sides. My grand dad on my moms side is still a racist prick. I believe many whites are racist and all whites benefit from racism in one way or another regardless of actually being racist. Don't be offended or hurt by her words. She seems weary of whites and probably rightfully so. It's good that you want to be involved in BLM but you have to understand where many are coming from

You are doing great. There's no reason to get upset because they said you couldn't join their schools BLM club because you are white. That's most likely a place where the black students can feel safe, relatable, and accepted. What you can do is help and cheer from the sidelines. The spotlight is on them - it is their movement. White people can't take it from them and make it about themselves. The best way you can help is call out racist and racially aggressive behavior, educate people on the matter, and as a white person GIF your privileged platform to black people so they can make their voices heard.

The absolute best thing you can do is to continue to fight for injustices and spread the love and knowledge you do. It works. Maybe talk to the BLM group and explain your perspective. They may not expect you to feel as you do or understand and due to their own perspectives and experiences, they are unable to identify your cause for wanting to be a part of their society.

She could have let you in, some people think black lives matter is only supposed to have black people in it, but it's all races if people coming together to stop the killing of black people. I seen white people that put their lives on the line to help black people. Not all white people are racists, the love like we love, care, and help any way possible. I live with ny boyfriend and he has mostly white friends and we would sit at sonic till it closes and have fun. You never hear anything about racism here. There's a man down the street that waves a confederate flag, but we don't trip on it. Many people have their own way of saying what a flag means. My boyfriend dated a girl who dad was racist, but the dad actually changed when he met my boyfriend because he wasn't disrespectful. The man actually thought all black men are disrespectful, but my bf showed him wrong. You can have your own club or just show support.
