Puppy training! Any advice?

My husband and I have been between jobs the last month so he really hasn't had to stay in his crate very often. We recently had to start crating him overnight. He used to sleep in bed with us. He will do great for about a week then randomly one day we will wake up and he will have found SOMETHING to destroy. He's starting getting up on our nightstands while we sleep and tearing anything and everything up. It wasn't a huge deal since he's rarely crated during the day. But now my husband and I both got full time jobs - and I don't want the poor pooch to be crated during work AND while we sleep :( My husband and I will be working the same shift so no one will be home. We have puppy proofed everything but he still occasionally finds something. The other day he got ahold of a pack of cigarettes which terrified me! I was asleep when it happened so thank god he just destroyed them and didn't eat them. Is there any advice you guys could give? Would it be okay for him to be crated that often throughout the week? I just want him safe - he seems to find anything he can that could hurt him when he's left to himself. Thank you guys!!!
