Would you personally get a bassinet, and a play pen? We will have a crib set up in the nursery but I also wanted to do a bassinet in our bedroom, would that eliminate the need for a playpen or should we still get one?

I got a pack and play instead of a bassinet for a few reasons. 
1. I knew we'd be able to use the pack and play once he wasn't using it to sleep, so I thought it was better than getting a bassinet we'd use for 4-5 months and then put in the basement forever. 
2. The pack and play is much bigger than most bassinets. My boy would have outgrown a bassinet much quicker than he outgrew his pack and play, which meant he could stay in our room longer. 
3. You can get pack and plays now with special bassinet tops so tiny newborns have a secure place to sleep and they not in the huge pack and play immediately if you don't like that. 
4. Pack and plays fold up for storage! Bassinets are such weird shapes and you'll just be looking at it forever in that shape which I don't like. 
5. This is a personal one, but my boy peed through every newborn diaper, and threw up A LOT. The pack and play has a very wipable surface, while bassinets are a lot more plush. I had to wash the sheets and such, but I just liked that I didn't feel like there was anything gross growing underneath. Similarly, I don't feel like the pack and play will accumulate any mold or anything in the basement after several years while I think a bassinet would 🤷🏻‍♀️

You could put bassinet in your bedroom and pack n play in the living room. That's what I'm going to do..

I personally wouldn't BUY a bassinet, though I used a travel bassinet for the first 4 weeks in the living room where my son slept most of the time.  I then used his rock and play, and now his pack n play...  I have a Dream on Me mattress for the pack n play so he can sleep even though he is too heavy for the bassinet.
 
3 weeks old (travel bassinet)

2 months old (rock n play... it is slightly inclined, and he slept through the night when I used this)

3 months old (bassinet insert in the pack n play)

4 Months Old (mattress on the bottom of pack n play. excuse the loose blankets)

I'd skip the bassinet. Babies outgrow them so quickly. I personally prefer the pack n play with a bassinet on top. I have that in my room and the crib in the nursery

I got the pack n play with the bassinet attachment. I used the bassinet a good bit but once my daughter hit the 15lb mark it was useless. I never once used her crib tbh lol 
So if the bassinet doesn't work for you, you'd still have the pack n play as well ☺️ I use mine a lot now.

I'm doing a crib, side car and pack n play. I wanted a side car specifically for co-sleeping and I wanted the pack n play for travel and naps downstairs. Also a pack n play won't fit in our bedroom. The side car bassinet may be extraneous but I know it will get great use.

I personally found my bassinet to be a waste of money. The pack n play will work as a bassinet if it has the elevated sling or bassinet attachment.
