Should I make my baby live?

Ka

Long story, please be patient. I really need opinions on this.

Even at my first ultrasound, the heart rate was low. It has remained low throughout the pregnancy so far. I am almost 19 weeks. Finally yesterday they saw me at a Maternal Fetal Medicine clinic, basically for high risk pregnancies. I was told my baby has a severe heart defect, hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Only an estimated 960 babies are born with it in the US each year. They immediately got me in with a doctor who did a fetal echo. They did not confirm or deny HLHS, but they did say a bunch of big words that I'll never understand. Below I will post the diagrams that the doctor drew me of a normal heart versus my baby's heart. They also told me my baby's stomach is on the right side when it's supposed to be on the left. Not only are there structural defects of the heart, there are also electrical defects of the heart. She would have to have a major open heart surgery at 3 days old, 4 months old, and 3 years old and have a pacemaker placed. She will also have to have a surgery on her gut to correct any intestinal problems she has. They are also not sure if she has a spleen. Aside from the three major heart surgeries, every few months she would have to have a heart catheterization and a pacemaker tune up (replacement or changing the battery). If she survives to her teens she will require a heart transplant. Only 60% survive the first year.

I have three options.

1) termination. I am totally, without a doubt, against this. So that is off the table.

2) surgery. This would entail a very painful road for her. She would basically live in a hospital. They also said she would be very cognitively delayed.

3) Carry her to term, but no surgery. This option they would make her as comfortable as possible while she lived (about a week).

I know no one can make this decision but me, but I really want to get other mom's views on it. A little background about me, I am 20, will be a single parent, and this is my first child.

Thank you in advance for your opinions.
