How old put to sleep while still awake?

At what age, how many weeks or months, do/did you start putting your baby down to sleep before they've actually fallen asleep so they can learn to fall asleep on their own?

my girl is 3.5 months and I just started doing this with her. It kinda happened by accident. I just transitioned her to her crib from her bassinet in my room. I thought she was asleep when I left her room but then when I got downstairs and turned on the monitor, I saw she had woken up. she wasn't crying so I just watched her and saw her look around a bit and then fall asleep in about 5 minutes! since then, I've seen her wake up at night and go back to sleep a bunch of times. when she was next to my bed, I would just pick her up to breastfeed but now that she is in her dark quiet room all alone she just kinda looks around and falls back asleep! I was shocked she could do that. I never gave her the opportunity, but she also maybe wasn't developmentally ready until now. parenting is such a learning process!

we do this with my 7 month at every nap and bedtime. we've been doing it for a few months now

We started when my daughter was about 5 months old. She went down to 3 naps a day so that's when I established a sleep schedule for her.
