I'll personally never understand why people don't wash clothes before wearing them.... You have no idea who has touched those clothes, whether or not they were sick, washed their hands recently, ect. Even clothes that come prepackaged from the factory have chemicals, dyes, and who knows what else in them.  Our pediatrician mentioned that there has been an increase of kids having rashes and breakouts from parents not washing their kid's new clothing before they let them wear it. If you're concerned about your laundry detergent being too strong, get a gentle, dye free one. Some people don't have a problem with their babies breaking out but I wouldn't risk it.

I was going to, but then the midwife who ran our antenatal class advised not to bother because baby may just as likely be allergic to your washing powder as the fresh-from-packet condition, so there's no point until you try them when baby arrives. We didn't have any problems with reactions from the shop bought clothes.
