Pain during urination

Is it normal for it to hurt to pee after sex or masturbation?

I've recently become sexually active in the last six-eight months, and was doing the deed pretty regularly for a little while then stopped then started again, and since then every time I urinate it stings.

Sometimes for a few days after sex the entrance of my vagina hurts and itches, is that normal too?

(I have gone to the doctor but hadn't gotten it checked out, she just gave me some thrush cream).

Is this something I should get checked out?
