Malachi OR Malakai?

Question

The hubby and I both agree we love the spelling and look of the original spelling better, Malachi, but then if his nickname is Kai, does Malakai make more sense?
If I text, "go pick up Chi from daycare" .... doesn't look right to me. Although, I think Malakai looks strange on paper as well. What are your thoughts??

Our 9 year old is named Malachi, but we call him Kai and he spells it that way at school. So we did both!

I like it spelled Malachi. I'd still call him and spell it like you wanted - Kai.

We have a Malachi and occasionally family members call him Kai - we never have to spell it though!

I like the original spelling...I think there are lots of "shortening" that aren't spelled exactly the same as they are within the name...like Ellie for Eleanor, jake for Jacob, etc

My cousin is Malachi, but we don't call him 'kai' because that means food here...
