You can ONLY conceive around ovulation. No egg, no baby. Sperm can live up to 5 days and the egg up to 1, so your sex window is 5 days pre-O to 1 day post. Highest chances are sex the day before ovulation, so the sperm is ready and waiting.
 
People who say they got pregnant way after ovulation are probably interpreting your question differently ... you don't get a positive test till implantation, which happens after conception. And many people don't actually know when they ovulate anyway. But those are the facts.
