Horrifying incident

Okay so I'm a nursing student in Colorado. I am currently in an ob clinical rotation and today I was assigned to shadow a delivery nurse.

We had this mother in labor come in and it was very obvious that something was off with this woman (other than just being in pain). The more I take care of her the more wrong something felt. Well we get her routine labs back and they found heroine in her system. So the nurse ask her about it and she full on admits that she shot up shortly before coming to the hospital. I was horrified.

When the baby was born he wasn't breathing. Thankfully the doctors got him back and he pulled through. Now this poor baby has to go through heroine detox before he's even 24hrs old.

The worst part of this whole situation is that in the state of Colorado we can't do anything about it because the fetus has no rights so it's not considered child endangerment to do heroine while pregnant.

This baby is going to go home with his heroine addicted mother.

I went home that day and balled my eyes out. My husband and I have been ttc for month and have had one mc. Yet this woman gets a healthy baby.
