brown paste umbilical cord

after two diaper changes im noticing a couple drops of brown paste either on his clothes or diaper, wherever the cord could touch. i look at the stump and underneath it, it has some brown paste. is this normal? Google isnt helping and the docs office isnt answering. edit...no blood edit edit... never cleaned it or got it wet under doctors orders.
