Is there a difference between wanting a baby and wanting to be a mother?

I was thinking about this the other day. I knew I was ready to start TTC after I wanted to be a mother and not just have a baby, if that makes sense. I didn't want a baby just to have for pictures or to use as an accesory,  but I wanted the caring aspect of it. changing diapers, painful breast feeding, growing a baby, I wanted it all...including the sleepless nights. to me, I think there is a difference. Let me know your thoughts.

Yes. I'm an RN on labor and delivery and I'm around adorable babies all day long and it makes me want one so bad! At work I always have the urge to have a baby lol. But then I get home and enjoy the silence and being able to do what I want to do. And I realize that I'm definitely not ready to be a mother right now even though babies are adorable and I love being around them.

i think they're is a small difference. Some people just like of love the idea of having a baby. But don't realize that its more than that sweet little bundle of joy. It can be hell lol but a mother to me isn't really the amount of stuff you do. Its the commitment to care and nurture this child you took on 100%. Regardless of how hard it gets, you openly want the responsibility to be a caretaker for as long as this child is around. Whether it's by adoption or your own pregnancy or if you breast feed or foster a kid who is 10.

I think about this a lot. I want to be a mother. I'd really love to do it the traditional way, by having a baby. But as that becomes less likely, I still very much want to be a mother.  We'll look at fostering, adopting etc. I guess there are a lot of differences between wanting a baby and wanting to be a mother.

I know someone who just wanted a baby but dropped the baby off with me 3/4 of the time only got him when it benefited her. I on the other had a baby to be a mother. I want to take care of him, love him, nurture him, and educate him.

Absolutely. Half of my niblings exist simply because of their mothers' feeting and selfish, or purely ignorant, whims. If you think that's harsh believe me I'm being very pc about their dispositions.

They're not the same thing even a little bit. People romanticize having a baby. It's not about having a baby. That baby is only a baby for a little while. Motherhood is a distance marathon. Not a sprint. And being short sighted enough to equate the two just shows how ignorant people are of what motherhood actually is.

I guess there is a difference. Especially when I see some who kind of treat their kid like an accessory. I do love being a mother, but there are some aspects of it I don't totally love all the time. The sleepless nights being one of them, but I still wouldn't have it any other way. I'd rather go through the sleepless nights and painful breastfeedings than not. If that makes sense?

I want to be a mother, but to me a lot of those things you listed don't constitute being a mother. Growing a baby and breast feeding? Not for me.
