Are video baby monitors worth it?

I was gifted a video monitor, which is exactly what I wanted, but we didn't get many of the things we needed, so now I'm wondering if I should return the monitor, get a sound-only one without the video camera, and use the extra money to get other things we need.

Sometimes a baby can soothe themselves back to sleep and u don't need to go running in there. If you don't have a video you will run in there anytime you hear a noise!

Totally worth it! I live in a small apartment but it still helps because if he's sleeping in his room I can clean/take shower/ etc without thinking that I keep hearing him crying.

I was one of those people that said "why have a video monitor, I'm just going to get up when I hear him" definitely  not the case. The monitor saved me on a lot of sleep. If he was making noise I could see if it was noises while asleep or awake. We not take it when we're camping so we can be by the fire and know he's ok in the camper.

I think if it comes down to it and you guys have things that are NEEDED then trade it in to get those things. Yes, they are nice but it's not a must have item.

My brother just sets up FaceTime. You can use a MacBook/iPad and leave it in their room, with another one (or iPhone) where ever you are in the house. It's smart, lol.

It is a good investment. Baby is in bed with me right now but I also have a camera on my 6 year old daughter. Helps for when she calls me in the middle of the night but only wants to ask a question or tell me something random. I can respond to her through the camera without having to get up and walk across the house ruining my sleep!

It depends on how badly you need other things. I look a lot on Facebook marketplace because there's a lot of people who give away baby stuff for free or really cheap but good quality. Of course everything at a store is marked up really high, so if you have some money but not a whole lot you can always thrift shop. Or ask friends who had kids in the last couple of years. Most of the stuff I have for my daughter is hand me downs. Breast pumps, clothes, shoes a rocking chair. My husbands family was nice enough to buy us a crib and clothe diapers. I also found it helpful to invite EVERY FAMILY MEMBER I could think of to my baby shower knowing very well they weren't going to travel 13+ hours to come see me, but that they would look at my baby registry and might send me something. Be smart and look down every avenue for what you need.

I never used a baby monitor with any of my kids. The all slept with us (in our room) until they were a good two and by then, I could hear them if they cried or, they'd just get up and come to us. And when they would nap, they'd either be in their pack n play (if we were in the living room) or in their crib (if we were in the bedroom).

The video monitor lets me distinguish between when my son is awake or just crying a little in his sleep. It also allowed me to swoop in when he was 14 months old, newly in his crib and got his leg stuck. I knew he needed me then, whereas he otherwise didn't and the video monitor helped me tell the difference.
