Will my supply go down?

My newborn is 5 days old and breastfeeding at night has become very difficult and has been causing me a lot of stress because he cluster feeds at night. I was wondering if I pumped throughout the day and also breastfed and just feed him what I pumped at night if that would make my supply go down?

If you don't pump at night or feed your supply will go down. Usually it's the rule of two. If you miss a feed two days in a row your supply will drop. If you don't want to nurse at night, pump before the baby wakes up and then give a bottle. But if you don't do anything at night, yes your milk will drop. It's supply and demand

Hi. I am a Breastfeeding Peer Helper for the Pickaway county WIC clinic. As long as your milk supply has been established which happens around three weeks post partum it is ok to start introducing pumping. Start slow because you want to make sure you're not taking away from your supply. We recommend that you pump in the mornings or anytime after a feeding when if you still feel full. It is ok to store breast milk that has been pumped within the same 24 hrs in the same bag. Even if you only get a few drops don't give up and be sure to save even those few drops! Good luck! you cannot do this until 4-6 wks. baby hasn't nursed enough to build your supply. practice laying down and nursing. no pumping until 6 wks or your supply will tank

I'm strictly pumping my babe is 18 days old and I have lots of frozen milk ! My supply keeps increasing

I would do that sometimes so I could get a break while my husband fed our son. I never had problems with decreased milk production. Even if I missed 2 feedings in a row. It can be a problem for some women, but sometimes we stress over too much. If you're not against supplementing with formula, you could try combo feeding at night. Or try pumping during the day to make a bottle at night and keep formula on hand just in case. But again like I said, I never had problems if I pumped a little after each day feeding to make a bottle for the night, even in the very early weeks.

Also he may not be getting enough throughout the day if you are pumping. Maybe that's why he wants to eat all night. It is normal for babies to go through growth spurts or periods of cluster feedings. You can do this! Aside from what's been said here is the info from kellymom on growth spurts Common times for growth spurts are during the first few days at home and around 7-10 days, 2-3 weeks, 4-6 weeks, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months and 9 months (more or less).

It's not only about your supply-- Google "nipple confusion" to learn why it's not recommended to introduce a bottle that early. You've got to tough it out if you want to breastfeed. Breastfeeding takes work & determination!
